The San Francisco Chronicle highlighted 10 memorable wines of 2012, one of which was produced by local wine maker the McCormick Family, who run the Memaloose tasting room and winery in Lyle, Washington. They are a self reported young winery with their first vintage in 2006 and produce wines under both the Memaloose and Idiot’s Grace labels.
8. 2010 Memaloose Idiot’s Grace Estate Columbia Gorge Cabernet Franc ($29): Say what? This was my great find during a spring trip to Washington state. The McCormick family farms grapes on either side of the Columbia River gorge that separates Washington and Oregon – as unheralded a wine country as you’ll find. Although the winery is in Lyle, Wash., Idiot’s Grace is their tiny organic vineyard in Mosier, Ore. For whatever reason, it’s a sweet spot for this aromatic cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety Washington does brilliantly. Floral, almost weightless and showing just the right amount of sweet berry fruit, it is a sign of a new, undiscovered chapter for the Northwest.
